DNA Testing for Weight Loss and Maintenance

Lifelong Metabolic Center uses DNA testing to help you determine the right plan to lose weight and keep it off.

Lifelong Metabolic Center is unique because it offers not only a jump-start portion to help you drop weight quickly and safely that includes real food, natural supplements, and a high level of accountability, but also DNA testing to help you find the right plan for weight maintenance.

DNA testing is quick and non-invasive, and we receive the results within a few weeks. It is by far the most important part of the Lifelong Metabolic Center weight loss program.

Why We Use DNA Testing as Part of Our Personalized Weight Loss Plan and Weight Management Program

We use genetic testing because we believe a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work in the world of long-term weight maintenance

Diets may work to help you lose the weight… but then what?

You need a sustainable plan to maintain that weight loss.

You need a lifelong plan for healthy eating and moderate exercise that is right for your body.

Lifelong Metabolic Center uses DNA testing because we need to know what you are made up of, how your body reacts to different foods, and how you metabolize different food groups in order to give you the best care possible. A 45-page report, with data taken from your DNA test, provides us with that information.

We use the DNA report’s data to develop your personalized program—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

How Can I Get a Weight-Loss DNA Test? Can I Do It at Home?

Lifelong Metabolic Center will mail you the test kit, so you can do an at-home DNA test and mail it directly to the lab.

Collecting the DNA sample involves a very simple procedure called a cheek swab. You’ll take two Q-tips and drag one along the inside of your mouth. It takes about 10 seconds and doesn’t hurt or gag you.

You’ll pack the Q-tips with your sample and mail the test to our genetic lab for processing. The reports are returned in about two to three weeks as a digital file. Dr. Borre will share that file via Dropbox, so you may save them, print them, or share them with a spouse or friend if you wish.

DNA Data Analysis Results: What Insights We Can Learn from Your Health Reports

The DNA test returns to us as a 45-page DNA health report based on how each gene tested presents in you. Your genetic test results will tell you things about yourself like how much drinking the right amount of water per day affects you or how sensitive you are to sugar, caffeine, alcohol, or carbohydrates.

Each gene tested has a paragraph of information about what that gene represents, how it presents in your body, and what that means for you.

Don’t worry about it sounding overwhelming.

Dr. Borre will be there to translate the lingo and help make sure you fully understand the report, what it means, and how to best use its results.

How Does DNA Testing Relate to Nutrition?

This data is compiled to give you a set of meal guidelines, such as how many ounces of protein, teaspoons of healthy fats, and cups of fruits or vegetables, dairy, starches, etc. you need to intake daily. The report breaks this data down into several options of easy-to-follow plans.

There are 5 different nutrition plans included. They range from the lowest level (for weight loss) to the middle level (for weight maintenance), all the way up to a plan best suited for a performance athlete. We choose the best diet plan for you based on your needs when we enter the maintenance phase of our program.

What Can DNA Weight Loss Test Kits Measure?

The two most important things this report helps us extract for your Lifelong Metabolic Center program are what to eat and how to exercise.

Macronutrient Recommendations for a Diet Plan Based on Genes

You may have heard the term “macros.” Also known as macronutrients, macros are the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins needed per day.

This report describes them in percentages and a quantified way. You can see how many grams of each you need or in serving sizes. This customized macro plan and food list can help you lose or maintain your weight.

This report even contains your micronutrient needs. It will discuss the amounts of all vitamins and minerals you need to be the healthiest you!

MET Ranges for Most Effective Types of Physical Activity

The exercise component gives you a MET range. Every exercise has a metabolic equivalent. MET is a term used to represent the intensity of exercise.

You may have seen METs on the display panel of a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike. MET is the amount of energy burned at rest or during a certain exercise.

Once we know your MET range from your DNA report, we can customize an exercise plan that includes physical activities that fit your lifestyle (time/energy/money), that you enjoy and are capable of doing.

No need for an expensive gym membership, but if you have a gym or exercise you like, we can tailor this to fit your goals and desires.

Does DNA Testing for Weight Loss Work? What about Weight Maintenance?

Yes, DNA testing for weight loss works, although it may not work in the way you think it does.

DNA can reveal a lot about a person. A simple swab of your cheek can tell us about genetic variants that impact your body’s ability to process certain “fuels” like sugar or carbs. However, a complete understanding of the human genome alone will not help you achieve your desired weight goals.

A DNA test offers insights to help you make better decisions for your overall health and wellness. Knowing which foods are more likely to lead to weight gain based on genetic predispositions can help you find more efficient and effective forms of diet and exercise.

Collecting your DNA and shipping a sample out to DNA testing companies will not provide you with the weight loss results you want. It is not a secret, magic-bullet solution.

You need to put in the work for weight loss but also to manage your weight. Maintainance is the most difficult part of any weight loss program, but the genetic information from our DNA test kit’s results will make it easier.
